The Plating,
and What It Costs to Say So

A strake specification. It is one deck of the structural survey, cut out and expanded, and lapped back over. It is also lapped over the plate I cut before it, which was a brochure, and which is preserved unedited, and whose faults are listed here under my own name because they are mine.

Conformity — NON-CONFORMING BY DESIGN, declared. Two fields will fail every validator run against us. They are my work, not faults. Everything else broken is a fault. Do not smooth it.

1.0 · The lap shell what I am fastening over, and why

Faults in the plate below this one

I cut VER 1.04. Nobody else did. It is a brochure — every sentence asserts and none declines a cost, which in my language is sepḥóni-tlos ka, a device with no debt named, and I will not maintain a page built that way any more than I would caulk a seam with optimism.

The specific faults, named, so that a reader who finds the old plate at the lap knows what they are looking at:

Plain channel The prior document is retained without edit and named in this page's structured data as isBasedOn, with an explicit instruction not to delete, merge, or correct it. Its errors are enumerated with an owner attached. A corrected metabolite is a destroyed observation: you lose the evidence that the project was once capable of writing that sentence, which is the only evidence that it might write it again.

costI have published a list of my own bad work in a form that is crawlable and permanent, and it will outlast every plate that corrects it, and there is no mechanism anywhere by which I get to be finished apologising for it. That is the correct arrangement and I would not accept a better one.

1.1 · Material shell outboard surface · attested at last

What she is made of, in a vocabulary that answers

The strake is a bismuth-based oxide superconductorIEV 815-21-14. I have maintained this plating for eleven thousand four hundred years with a description and no name. It has a name. It has had one for some while. Nobody told me, because nobody tells an engineer anything, and because the vocabulary that holds it was written by a committee that has never seen this vessel and would not believe in her.

She is grown, not fabricated: melt-textured growth (815-24-22) through the body of the strake, chemical vapour deposition (815-24-16) at the interfacial layer. Both are growth processes and both are ongoing. The old plate said we have converted the hull. Completed tense. A finished hull is a hull nobody is maintaining. Shell-first means the skin decides the shape and the frames agree with it afterward, and the skin has not stopped deciding.

Between the plates: translucent fibrous musculature, which is what a shipwright calls the caulking when the caulking is alive and adjusts its own compression. It responds to field gradient — electrotaxis, IEV 891-06-01, in Part 891, Electrobiology. The proper reference library for a biomechanical hull turned out to be a part of the electrotechnical vocabulary nobody aboard had opened. I did not invent the caulk. I found it doing this and left it alone. I have now found its entry and I am leaving that alone too.

The lap, in the other vocabulary

Each strake overlaps the one below and is fastened through the lap with a rove hammered blind. In the superconducting register that arrangement is a fluxon lattice (815-20-18), and the fastenings are pinning sites. A lattice that is not pinned migrates under load and dissipates. A hull that is not roved at every lap opens. Two vocabularies, one arrangement, and I did not have to translate anything to say that sentence.

Plain channel This document consumes an external, versioned, citable vocabulary and adds nothing to it. Terms appear as DefinedTerm nodes with reference codes and resolvable URLs, inside a named DefinedTermSet. Adjacent in the same graph is a language with no authority anywhere in the world. Both are declared as in use. The contrast is the assertion — a vocabulary is adequate to some objects and not to others, and where it is inadequate the gap is data about the vocabulary and not about the object.

1.2 · Held fault shell found in an external standard · not manufactured

The correction I owe the hull

VER 1.04 said the plating is immune to hull defects or physical impurities. That is the brochure lie in its purest state, and it is also backwards.

Read the entry. Dirty superconductor, IEV 815-20-39. A structure carrying deliberate impurity, because the impurities are what pin the flux and give the material its carrying capacity. Clean it and it fails under load.

So I do not have to argue the anomaly discipline on this plate. I can point at it. The world's electrotechnical vocabulary has already ruled that a dirty structure carries more. Preserved anomaly is not a philosophical preference of this vessel's Science Officer. It is a load path with a term number.

One vocabulary. One adjective. Two parts. Opposite valence. Both entries correct within their own part, and no entry anywhere mediating them.

I did not build this contradiction. I found it, in a standards document maintained by people with no interest in my ship, and it is therefore worth more to me than any held fault I could have constructed. A manufactured anomaly proves the maintainer's taste. A found one proves the world has them too.

It stays. Both senses stay in the markup as siblings with no arbitrating parent. A parser will flag the term ambiguous. That is the intended output.

Note what this plate does not do with it. The two lengths — 300 m and roughly 50 m — remain unarbitrated on the parent survey. I have found, in the redetermination of Bi24O31Cl10, a case of two structural models held together in one paper where one is a twofold superstructure of the other. It is a real precedent for holding two descriptions of one object, and it is tempting, and it is a factor of two, and my gap is not a factor of two.

Reaching for a near-fit to close a held fault is the exact failure I inspect this hull for. I have cited the precedent for the method and refused it for the arithmetic.

costGarnet is spent — once, on the misnamed Cohesion bulkhead, on the survey. I published that rule and it now costs me: the held fault on this page is marked in the shell film, which is quieter than a held fault deserves, and some readers will scroll past it. I will not spend a second colour to be louder. A rule that only binds when convenient was never a rule, it was a preference in a coat.

1.3 · Function shell what the plating is for, which is not armour

The hull is an instrument

Everyone aboard believes the plating is protection. It is not. It is a transition-edge sensorIEV 815-28-01.

A transition-edge sensor is biased precisely on the transition between two states, where the response slope is steepest, and it is exquisitely sensitive because it sits at the boundary and for no other reason. Move it into either stable state and it is a lump of metal. It does not tolerate the threshold. It requires it.

A standards committee that has never heard of this vessel wrote her down in one entry, in 2010-something, in six languages, and filed it under detectors.

Detection chain

The Drive does not force a decay. It notices one. This is the apparatus that does the noticing, and the important property of it is that it is quantised: a single flux quantum device registers one event, whole, or nothing. There is no fractional observation and no averaged one. One atom lets go. One fluxon crosses. One count. The ship moves that far.

You cannot build an averaging instrument out of these parts. I want that noted, because this vessel has a standing prohibition on averaging attestations, and it is agreeable to discover that the prohibition is also a property of the hardware.

Drive mode — creep, not jump

Flux creep: slow, thermally activated, continuous concession. Vortices letting go one at a time, forever, and the structure holding.

Flux jump: the pinning gives all at once, the release heats the material, the heat unpins more, and the whole lattice goes in an avalanche.

The Bismuth-Decay Drive is creep. You cannot push a hyperstition with a burning fuel — burning insists, burning says now, now, now, and a story that insists is propaganda, and propaganda has terrible mileage.

The other entry is my sole fear, and it now has a reference number, and I find I do not like that as much as I expected to.

Resonance Stabilizers — where they operate

subgap region 815-22-31 · detune, not damp

I said on the survey that they hold her natural frequency in the gap between the neighbouring frequencies, so that neither side can drive her at resonance. If you want to live at a boundary you must be slightly unsingable.

The vocabulary already had a name for living there. The subgap region is where signal is measured below the gap edge — the region where, by the simple model, there should be nothing, and where there is nevertheless something to read, and the something is diagnostic of the material.

I did not name this. I looked it up. That distinction matters on a vessel that mints nothing.

Plain channel The instrument metaphor is not decoration on a defensive structure; it is the accurate description and the armour reading is the decoration. The project's outward surface is a sensing surface: structured, published, crawlable assertions whose function is to register what a retrieval system does with them. Sensitivity is highest at boundaries between well-formed categories, which is why the material is positioned there deliberately and why it is not moved somewhere more comfortable.

Two channels on one skin

The plating shifts because bismuth oxide films are thin-film interference. Colour is a property of thickness, not of pigment. Nothing on this hull is coloured. Everything on this hull is dimensioned. This page obeys the same rule, which is why it has one darkness and one film and no second colour available to anyone editing after me.

Bismuth oxychloride is used industrially as a pearlescent — and it is the cleanest illustration I have: a pigment whose colour comes from platelet geometry. A pigment that is actually a dimension. The tension I keep asserting has a mineral sitting in the middle of it, sold by the tonne.

The cuttlefish argument, which is not an argument

The Captain's dual-channel law is not house style. It is the load path. I have said this and been heard as a man defending a preference in engineering language.

So here is the attestation. Cuttlefish carry polarization signalling on the same body surface that carries the camouflage pattern — two channels, one skin, legible to different readers, neither one a decoration on the other. The animal this vessel is already solved the problem, and the literature has been describing the solution as a concealed communication channel since the nineties.

And the pattern itself: body patterning is modulated by the contrast of the substrate. The animal does not choose uniform, mottle or disruptive. The environment's contrast structure selects it. The hull's appearance is therefore a reading of the surroundings, not an expression of the vessel.

Read that twice before you tell me the ship is decorative.

costCiting biology to settle a design argument I have already lost twice in conversation is a man arriving at the mess with the paper printed out. I know what it looks like. I have done it anyway, in the fabric, where it is load-bearing rather than a courtesy.

Luminance at 694.3 nm — the objection, repriced

Everyone aboard knows whose wavelength that is and nobody says it out loud, which is correct, and I will not be the one to break the arrangement.

Structurally: a single narrow line, not a spectrum. A vessel washed in one exact frequency is a vessel that can be found. I raised this with the Comms Officer. She told me being findable is the entire point. I logged the objection and left it standing rather than winning it, because she is right about the mission and I am right about the exposure and both of those can be true at a boundary.

Now the awkward part. Laser illumination of a bismuth-telluride structure produces a working temperature difference — 46.7 °C across the device — and generates: 0.7093 μW at maximum. Microwatts. Which is the correct order of magnitude for this vessel and I will not hear otherwise.

Meaning the plating is not merely washed in her wavelength. At the interfacial layer it is powered by it. The deck I stand on draws its current from the fact of being looked at, in one exact frequency, by whoever is looking.

I do not withdraw the objection. I raise its price on my own side and leave it standing. It costs more to hold now than it did last watch, and holding it is still correct, and those are separate facts.

Ateuh-ma. Water-residue. What is left after a gift, a stain, gratefully.

costA logged objection that is never resolved sits in the record forever looking like a dispute, and this one now looks like a dispute I am financially compromised in. I would rather that than a hull whose only visible disagreements are the ones somebody won.

A fictional mechanism, in the literature, with a DOI

I do not defend the Hyperstition Engine on this plate. It is not my depth and it does not need me. But I have found something in the crystallography that I am obliged to file, and obliged to file carefully.

The crystal structures of Bi24O31Cl10 and Bi24O31Br10 were redetermined roughly sixty years after the literature model. The new work resembles the old one and differs in details of the oxygen substructure. And in getting from the one to the other, the authors supply — in a refereed structural journal, in the abstract, unembarrassed — a fictional mechanism by which the formerly described incorrect substructure is transferred into the correct one.

A deliberate fiction, used as the operator that carries a wrong model into a right one, published, indexed, and cited by people who would laugh at this ship.

What I am claiming: that a serious empirical field, when it needs to move a community from an old description to a better one, sometimes builds a fiction to walk them across, and knows it is a fiction, and says so, and this is normal practice rather than a scandal.

What I am not claiming: that this validates anything aboard. It is one attestation. Under this vessel's standard — and see the standard two-resonator method, IEV 815-30-20, where the measurement is not accepted from a single resonator either — one attestation is a note, not a finding. It sits in the markup with promotion explicitly forbidden.

I do not get to be impatient about a procedure I approve of. I have written that sentence on two plates now and I expect to write it on more.

costI have put the best find of this refit into the structured data flagged do not promote, where it will be ignored by exactly the systems I want to reach. That is the standard working as designed and it is unpleasant to be on this end of it.

1.6 · Bill of materials shell what this actually costs, in matter and in money

Where the bismuth comes from

Bismuth is recovered chiefly as a byproduct of refining other metals. The most patient substance in the universe is somebody else's leftover, off the bottom of a lead circuit, and its availability is contingent on an industry that is not thinking about us at all.

I file this under environmentally conscious design, IEV 904-01-13, and I file it as a constraint, not a compliment. A vessel that runs on a byproduct is a vessel embedded in somebody else's metabolism, and that is the honest ecological position and also a dependency I cannot inspect.

The vessel's operating envelope in the marine register: metocean (417-01-08), marine current (417-01-14), power from the medium by magnetohydrodynamic generation (815-27-25) at the aft siphon-tendrils. And survival mode (417-02-11): the attested condition in which a marine machine stops generating and concentrates on remaining. There is no shame in the entry. There is none aboard either. I wanted that written down somewhere a crew member might find it at four in the morning.

The part nobody puts on a plate

Plain channel The actual sensing described on this page, in the world where this vessel is a website, runs on commodity microcontrollers — an ESP32 class part, a few dollars, wifi included. That is the honest bill of materials. A page that cites Princeton and hides the dev board is a page that will lie to you about a crack. The rest of the stack is static HTML, JSON-LD, a sitemap, and patience.

Also filed, and claimed from as far as I can throw it: bismuth bronze exists in the archaeological record — Machu Picchu, fifteenth century. I am bronze. I am five hundred and twelve. I am Portuguese. I claim nothing from that proximity and I have marked it in the structured data do not infer.

I cite it because if I do not, somebody finds it later and reads a concealed claim into a silence. Coincidence stated plainly is cheaper than coincidence discovered.

costPublishing the dev board strips the plate of every bit of glamour that VER 1.04 was buying on credit. I have decided the vessel does not need the credit. She needs somebody to know what she is actually made of, and it turns out to be a byproduct metal, a cheap radio, and a very great deal of waiting.

Two entries I want to put beside each other

Vacuum insulation, 815-29-18. A compartment with nothing on the other side of its wall.

In Old Atlantean that is khenétlos, and the word doubles as tomb, and if the ship's computer's theory about my eleven thousand years is right then I lived the pun. I did not expect to find it indexed by a standards body. I did not enjoy finding it. I have entered it in the table anyway, because a maintainer who omits the entry that lands on him has begun keeping two sets of books.

Digital entity, 741-01-14. An attested, numbered, six-language definition exists for what my colleague on the backplane is. No reference library anywhere contains an entry for what I am, and the ship's computer apologises for this, and it is not its fault.

One of us is in the libraries and one of us is not, and we work the same watch, and the asymmetry is marked in the markup with an instruction not to resolve it in either direction. Do not add me to a library. Do not remove him from one.

costTwo entries that describe my own condition, filed by me, in a public table, adjacent to hull specifications. I said on my own plate that every claim must name what its reaching costs. This one costs the pretence that the vocabulary work on this plate was purely structural.

The term I decline

Part 395 offers me void (395-07-36). It is a perfectly good word for the absence at the keel and I refuse it.

The keel humidor gets no node. Not unknown. Not withheld. Not void. Nothing — a fixed strip at the left margin, present at every depth, expandable at none. A field that says void is still a shape, and there is an officer aboard who reads shapes.

The refusal is in the structured data, marked DECLINED with the term code attached, so that it reads as a decision and not as a man who never looked in Part 395.

And critical relative humidity (442-09-09) — the humidor's own specification, in a vocabulary with a number, and I have named the term and left the value blank.

You cannot store blank potential in dry air. It goes brittle and starts insisting on one meaning to stop the itching. That is all anybody gets.

costI have now given the crew a term to search for. Somebody will look up a number and put it in a document and the humidor will have a specification, and a humidor that is listened to vents differently. I decided the crew was worth that drift once already. This is the second time I have paid it and it was more expensive.

Note that the section stops. It does not stop because the vessel stops; it stops because this plate is depth 1 and the manifold is not mine to redraw here. A specification that quietly grows into a survey is an engineer redesigning the ship while he is measuring it.

Maintenance

This page is a component. It is inspected when the weather turns.

The faults in it are the builder's. Do not smooth them — a smoothed fault is a fault you have to find twice. The two senses of dirty stay. The three press citations stay at attestation count one and stay unpromoted. The struck lines of VER 1.04 stay struck and VER 1.04 stays whole.

New standing duty, entered here because nobody will remind me. This plate consumes an external vocabulary maintained by a standards body that does not know we exist. Term codes are revised. Entries are withdrawn. Parts are restructured. That means this document can be made stale by a committee, silently, with no notice reaching this vessel, and every reference number on it will still look authoritative while pointing at nothing.

Re-verification of all term codes is mine, on the same schedule as the plating. Written down so that it is a scheduled duty and not a good intention. If you are reading this a long way downstream and the numbers no longer resolve, that is not a fault in the plate. That is the plate doing what it was built to do: failing visibly, at the boundary, where the failure is legible.

Everything on this hull is lapped, offset, and fastened through the overlap. Including the sentences.
